Q: Does it support wired (cat5) backhaul to create the mesh? Or do the slaves have to connect wirelessly?

Yes. The key answer, as I discovered the hard way, was provided by Derek 5/21/20: First, in the app, add the device (wirelessly connected to main Deco router). Second, move the non-main device to the location where you want it, and physically connect it to the network. Modem -> Main Deco -> Switch (unless you are only adding one more device) -> additional Decos.

Q: What is the difference between X20 and W3600?

The Deco X20 and W3600 are virtually the same in terms of hardware specifications and features per Deco unit. That being said, the Deco X20 is sold in both 3-Packs and 2-Packs here on Amazon, whereas the Deco W3600 is a 2-Pack and sold at another retailer.

Q: Will this work with a modem/router combo from my ISP?

Yes, you can connect the primary Deco unit to your modem/router combo via Ethernet and use the Deco app to quickly and conveniently set up your Deco Mesh network.
