Q: Buying for my teenage son, other than the filament will I need to purchase anything else?

I would recommend buying a glass heating plate, as the cooling is important in terms of shrinkage and adherence. It also aids removing the printed object without damage. I'd also suggest buying a litre of acetone for cleaning the plates/nozzles. The key to the process is getting a good base layer down. If it fails you'll never get it to build properly. To design your own things you will need a 3D modeling package, Blender is free and a good starter. Lots of free STL models exist online. The product is well made and amazing for the money. Q: Does the firmware have thermal runnaway

That depends on the version of firmware it has. Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to check that until it arrives. It needs to be 1.8xx or something to have the thermal protection. Mine came with v6, so it doesn't have it.

Q: Does it cost a lot of electric to run?

I’ve never measured, but I can’t imagine it’s any worse than a TV or other appliance.
